An excellent suggestion. I loved fishing with my dad as a kid. An excellent time to think about nothing.

I will see if my dad is too busy with work.

best,

Actually, you never know. The fish might be into historical Jesus research too! Maybe one of the fish will have an ancestor who claims to have been there when Jesus was walking on water? Leave no stone unturned. Question everything--even the fish!

And maybe you could catch those Darwin fishes too, with feet and hands with opposable thumbs.

Vinnie, that reminded me of Richard Carrier's essay. I dunno, perhaps because of the talking fish.

Excuse my rambling...

I've been saying for a long time that first we need to have a realistic and honest picture of earliest Christian history. Then we need to have a realistic and honest picture of the development of the earliest Christian gospels. And _only then_ we will have a chance to see who the HJ really was.

So if the first 2 of these 3 steps have still not been made, then naturally the #3 becomes just a waste of time...

Best,

Yuri.

Peter:

Or at least "a son of a god."

Doherty has given a free copy of his book to the Society of Biblical Literature, and nobody there has read it to review it. You know how it feels like to be snubbed.
I am not sure "sending" books will result in a scholar writing a review. Usually, a scholar submits a review. Granted, some texts will generate reviews and an "important" text may get invitations for a review to prevent a bunch of people writting them. Perhaps I misunderstand the policy of of the SBL and its journal the JBL.

Perhaps you should submit a review to the JBL?

The other problem is that such "specialized" journals do not bother to "discuss" what is considered "popular" works. I can understand it--why "waste time" cutting appart a work "everyone" in scholarship knows is a crock? Also, the idea may be that the readers of the journal do not need assistance determining whether or not such a work is good.

While I understand that, I regret it. As far as I know, the JBL has not deigned to examine Stroebel's work(s). I think most people here do not find his work "scholarship" and the JBL may not wish to "sully" themselves with such.

That is a problem . . . part of the responsibility, in my mind, of a "scholarly journal" is to publish "truth"--or at least well-reasoned theory. It has a responsibility to demonstrate why such popular suppositions is crap. Otherwise, panders of such remain unexposed. Their proponents slather the "they-are-afraid-to-confront-the-Truth" crap.

I corresponded with the editors of the JBL some time ago when, on another page, I became engaged with a poster who claimed that all of the gospels say the same thing, it is all true, you just are to blind to see the truth . . . blah . . . blah . . . there is no Q, Mt wrote the text just after the crucifixion blah blah blah. I had encouraged the poster to write up her "revelation" and submit it to the JBL for publication. I wanted to give her assurance that her "revelation" would be reviewed.

I remember the response from the office. One likened these theories, "to my sainted mother-in-law who is convinced we have never landed on the moon." However, he did state that if someone were to submit it, it would go through the peer-reviewed process . . . with the proverbial snowball's chance in Ft. Lauderdale of becoming accepted. He compared it to a paper on homeopathy becoming accepted by the New England Journal of Medicine.

He also added, though, that "many readers do believe this still."

So [ZZZZzzzzZZZZzzzzZZZZzz--Ed.] "many readers" of the JBL will want to reject Doherty's theories at face value. Nevertheless, unless his book is obvious crap--I have not read it--I think they should at least consider a review if you submit it.

Bertrand Russell is and always has been my one and only God.

He looked for the mind of God without being convinced that there is evidence for such a thing.
