Present in almost all manuscripts incuding P75 the oldest.

Missing in Codex Bezae, in a lot of the Old Latin and in the Old Syriac (both Curetonian and Sinaitic Syriac)

Bezae is the only Greek manuscript to omit the verse; the other evidence is versional.

Each Easter, in the Phillipines, there is a major festival around the crucifixion and resurrection. The central feature of this festival is the actual crucifixition of volunteers (not to death of course). It is a major spectacle.

My question is could there have been a mistranslation which has caused confusion between wrist and palm?

Also since a spike through the wrist would of course break bones would this not cause a problem, since the NT insists that no bones were broken.
The best place, of course, would be between the radius and the ulna. This wrist is a bit distal from this location, for which there doesn't seem to be a common name.

Edited to add: Oddly enough, extremely early paintings of the crucifiction of Jesus had four nails, two between the radius and ulna, and two between the tibia and fibula. It was only later that artists adopted the convention of three nails, two through the palms and the other somewhere through both feet. This is probably impractical, as I think that putting one leg on top of another and trying to drive a nail through both would be very difficult and hardly worth the price of a nail (which you get back a few days later anyway).

If I recall correctly, the only example of an actual crucifixion victim discovered so far, appears to have had both feet nailed separately through the heels to a center board. IOW, the feet were placed to either side of the central post and nailed through the heels.

I saw some people doing this on tv. I think it was in South America. They placed small square pieces of wood over the palms and drove the nails through. The look on the kids face when the hammer struck was priceless. He looked like he was thinking, "Man, this was one stupid idea. This fucking hurts!" They hoisted the sorry bastard up and paraded him through the town. Some pretty fucked up stuff.

Mores are always right because they have been proven to work. It would sure beat hell out of the sinners prayer . . . wouldn't it?
