Historically, I think that's been the case, but it seems less true now than in the past. I participated in two newsgroups, rec.arts.marching.drumcorps and alt.fan.utena, that are dying while two moderated webforums devoted to the same topics are thriving. Also, several moderated newsgroups have been started or are in the process of being started that seem to be doing well, as their unmoderated equivalents have come under attack from outsiders, but the moderated groups are protected by moderation from attack.

Maybe you can try working on the Historical Jesus stub at SkepticWiki. I had left that article hanging because I wasn't sure what to add, and much of its content ended up moved to other articles that were more focused. So far, the tendency of SkepticWiki has been to try to be more accurate than the SAB, so I doubt that your work will end up butchered.
