Funny comment from Cristian Ispir

Quote:
Fascinating, it must have spiced things up at the Congress. I wonder how much interest goes into the rest of the papers and speakers now with all the stolen focus.

On our own Tom Verenna's blog post:

Marilyn Lundberg Melzian -

My first reaction was the same as Tom Verenna's--the script and line placement just look a bit off. I'm not a papyrologist, so I could very well be wrong. My hesitation comes from the fact that we (at West Semitic Research) have photographed a lot of papyri and even without knowing anything about its content I would wonder. I also must confess that I am a bit tired of the overuse of the term "gospel" for any text that happens to mention Jesus.

This story is all over the place. I heard Mike Malloy on my local liberal talk radio station last night, who usually just fulminates against the evil of Republicans and the spinelessness of their opposition. But he talked almost reverentially about how he believed in a historical Jesus (a progressive community organizer) and this human Jesus would have expressed some sort of sexuality, etc. And he dug up a 19th century Mormon preacher who maintained that Jesus had multiple wives:

Mormon research

Quote:
On October 6, 1854, Mormon Apostle Orson Hyde stated,
"How was it with Mary and Martha, and other women that followed him [Jesus]? In old times, and it is common in this day, the women, even as Sarah, called their husbands Lord; the word Lord is tantamount to husband in some languages, master, lord, husband, are about synonymous... When Mary of old came to the sepulchre on the first day of the week, instead of finding Jesus she saw two angels in white, 'And they say unto her, Woman, why weepest thou?' She said unto them,' Because they have taken away my Lord,' or husband, 'and I know not where they have laid him.' And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus. Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away. Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master.' Is there not here manifested the affections of a wife. These words speak the kindred ties and sympathies that are common to that relation of husband and wife" (Journal of Discourses 2:81).

Both Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert worked this find into their comedy routines.

That's the main stumbling block to mythicism. Jesus is too popular a character in the modern imagination.

My money is on fraudulence. If I wanted to make a fraudulent early Christian document, that is about how I would do it.

Jon Stewart had a routine on the Daily Show - "pure uncut sitcom bait."

And on a less serious note, Simcha Jacobovici TV is intererested.
