So... Unless I am mistaken, dave had some pretty strong opinions on this issue. Made some definite assertions, too.

Has he posted in this thread, after it was made especially for him?

No?

Why am I not surprised- again?

The U.S. adopted "In God We Trust" as the national motto in 1956, replacing "E Pluribus Unum".

Immediately before this, they had won the Korean War.

However, after choosing to place their trust in God, they went on to lose the next big conflict, the Vietnam War.

I suspect the North Vietnamese had a few iron chariots.

The achievement of the christian era was the "dark ages", one thousand years of imposed and sustained ignorance, the worst disaster in European history. There are no known surviving texts by, for example, Eudoxus, the shame for humanity occasioned by the christian legacy is heart rending. Why would anyone defend this shit?

Wow! That is concerning. Got a link for that?

There is only one Empire.
Britain.
This royal throne of kings, this sceptred isle,
This earth of majesty, this seat of Mars,
This other Eden, demi-paradise,
This fortress built by Nature for herself
Against infection and the hand of war,
This happy breed of men, this little world,
This precious stone set in the silver sea,
Which serves it in the office of a wall
Or as a moat defensive to a house,
Against the envy of less happier lands,—
This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England.

I assume that you mean the claim about the Jedi, since the British Empire certainly did not start to decline in 1859, and was fairly robust until well after World War I; it was only after World War II that the Empire was dismantled.

To attribute the loss of the 'greatness' of Britain to the repudiation of Biblical principles demonstrates both an ignorance of history and of how history is studied.

To begin with what, exactly, do you understand by the term 'great'? What other countries and/or empires would you define as currently or previously 'great' and what are your criteria for 'greatness'? To what would you attribute the 'rise' of 'greatness' and to what would you attribute its 'decline'. How, in fact, would you measure a value-ridden term such as 'great'?

Do you want to turn this into a meaningful discussion, or was this just another off-the-cuff, ill-considered fundy statement of stupidity?

I trust that is a rhetorical question?
