You can read about this in 'Acts of the Apostles'. Paul's conversion to Chritianity is described in chapter 9.
There were 12 disciples (although the NT is not clear or consistent about their names), but many "apostles" in the NT. Paul always describes himself as an apostle of Jesus Christ.

Paul's conversion to Christianity is described three different times in Acts, in three different ways - Acts 9 vs Acts 22 vs Acts 26
