Do any Gnostic writings reference Buddha? There seems to be a lot of overlap in their basic philosophy ...

The story of the Buddha's conception was possibly first written down in the 2nd or 3rd century C.E. (in the Buddhist scriptures called the Nidanakatha), at least this is the earliest known source. According to the story, at the moment of his conception the Buddha's mother dreamed that a sacred baby white elephant entered her side. This can be interpreted to mean that a human male was not involved with this. (e.g. She was asleep and having a sacred dream at the time he was conceived) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_Maya Another interesting Buddha-Jesus parallel is that the Buddha's soul was that of a powerful god's (who lived for billions of years prior to passing on its soul to the earthly Buddha. i.e. The god's soul was re-born into the Buddha) |
