It feels like it might be about a gnostic thread, but did not Umberto Eco do a similar thing with Foucault's Pendulum?

This preacher may be trying to copy Dan Brown.

The starting point is probably much older, with Greek ethical thinking, Socrates and Plato admixed with Zarathustra, Buddhism and Judaism.

Why does he start where he does?

Are we still fighting the Greek Persian wars?

With the many book tokens I got for Xmas I bought Umberto Eco On Beauty.

This has a discussion of Homer and the beauty of Helen.

Fascinatingly it describes the views of Socrates and Plato as actually being completely different and contradictory, something I had not clearly picked up on before.

For example Plato argued school children should not be taught art, but only geometry, as art is always a misrepresentation of the real truth.

"But".... it comes well recommended by James Tabor ? Should that not be an "And" ?
James Tabor does have a PhD and tenure at a respectable university. So he cannot be dismissed like those uncredentialed mythicists. :Cheeky:

This is, I trust, the same James Tabor who claimed in The Jesus Dynasty (or via: amazon.co.uk) that Jesus was the son of a Roman soldier Pantera but then reversed himself under the weight of the epochal discovery of the James' ossuary.

Jiri
I don't think he has reversed himself - he has worked the ossuary into his theories. But I can't say that I have studied him that intensely.

FYI, Barbara Thiering is a PhD and taught at Sydney U. Everyone agrees she is crazy as a bedbug.

Don't waste your time....just tell us, will you, how does Tabor propose to make the fake box significant if he believes Jesus was a bastard? Did Pantera knock up Mary twice ?
