Of course, plenty of people believe nothing was said at all.

a) no, b) by comparing it to other sources and trying to find a trajectory back to its earliest forms.

Assuming Jesus' historicity, it is possible. I am aware of no evidence that makes it probable relative to any of the other gospels.

We don't know, and we can't know. But as Chris noted, a comparison with other documents could make it reasonable to believe it.
