Thumbs up Fundamentalism In Action

http://www.cnn.com/2004/US/11/13/chi....ap/index.html

Quote:
ROCHESTER, New Hampshire (AP) -- A woman and her boyfriend are accused of plotting to sacrifice the woman's three children on a church altar.

Nicole Mancini, 29, and John Thurber, 35, were arrested at St. Mary's Church on Wednesday after workers said they heard the woman say she wanted to sacrifice the boys.

"We could tell this woman was not right," said church secretary Donna Landolfi. "She said, 'Let's go make the sacrifice."'

Mancini and Thurber were in jail Saturday on more than $25,000 bail. They were arraigned Friday on three counts each of misdemeanor child endangerment. Thurber was also charged with marijuana possession.

The children, ages 9, 7 and 2, were not harmed and were placed in state custody. Police said Thurber is the father of the youngest boy.

That's not fundamentalism.

That's just stupidity.

This is mental illness, not fundamentalism.

Granted, the two are very close sometimes, but not in this case. I can't see even Oral Roberts advocating or doing something this stupid.

When God told Abraham to sacrifice Isaac on the altar, and Abraham demonstrated his willingness to do so, this was deemed virtuous. If this woman believed that God told her to sacrifice her children, then according to the old testament, she was behaving appropriately by attempting to do so. Thre's a fine line between relgious fervor and mental illness.

But see, thats the thing.
At the root, it has nothing to do with any religion.
Otherwise every Muslim would be a killer.

There are those who have taken shelter under the guise of just about any relgion who are just insane nutcases who need to be tossed into cell somewhere away from society.

I could say Im Hindu, run down and buy a ak47 and go to Mcdonalds and start mowing people down. But in the end it has nothing to do with religion. Id be just aother mental patient with a gun.

Let me rephrase...

"And people wonder why I feel that religions that assert having the absolute and unnering truth are tools that can be abused in the wrong hands"

The difference being that there really are no 'right hands' in which religion can be used.
