It will be short lived. I don't want too much blood building up in my alcohol stream

And I don't accept your assertion that Mark made it all up. Someone before him might have made it up. This could be confirmed by Hebrews. Mark might have inherited a few disparate traditions he strung together as well.
Naw. That kind of literary dependence does not travel well. It's more likely that Mark himself is the author.

I have read Brown's comments on this. He hardly writes "Mark has doublets thus equals fiction" in volume 1 of Death of the Messiah. There is some reservation expressed with the doublets IIRC.
Vinnie, I didn't say that Brown claimed doublets = fiction. What I said was that Brown said there were doublets. The presence of doublets = literary construction, another element of fiction.

But you are right. I should have read the article. I assumed from you remarks you were arguing there was some historical basis for it.

...I comment on the often quoted objection: How could the disciples have known what Jesus prayed if he was so far away and they were sleeping. This objection does not appear to be able to with-stand critical evaluation....

Vinnie
I have met fundamentalists who believe that since "God" wrote the Bible, He was omniscient. God heard the prayer and wrote it down through inspiration. God also heard the apostles snoring and saw Mel Gibson--2,000 years later-- rubbing his creative hands together in anticipation.

Depends on the flavor of inspiration one subscribed to. Even the conservative ones come in different flavors.

But since there is no evidence God wrote the Bible and theists have the sole burden of proof here.....

Unfortunately, (in my opinion) truth is "pretzel logic" to some of these folks. The powers of tiny minds and fantastic beliefs trump serious inquiry and informed scholarship among most Christians today. I hope I am wrong, though.

In another thread Vinnie was arguing that the story of Jesus praying while his disciples slept just before his capture need not be fiction.

Maybe his disciples heard him pray before falling asleep etc..

I suggest that the bit about Jesus praying falls very well in what Vinnie is saying here.

Different truths for different occasions..
NOGO wrote this in the peanut gallery thread. I can't respond to it in there. Not being able to respond is greatly annoying me LOL

Of course there is no "inherant" reason why it need not be. At any rate, I did not deem the Gethsemane account historical and I never said Jesus said what the accounts say he did.

This thread and the article I wrote are clear enough.
