"The Lord shall raise him a king of Israel who shall cut off the house of Jeroboam that day",. The emphasis here is on the inevitability of what is prophecied, rather than the timescale. A few minutes with a standard concordance will reveal a number of verses containing "that day" that refer to events in the future, where the emphasis is on the inevitability of what will happen. I know it is not precisely the wording "the day", but given that both the passage in Genesis and the Solomon passage are predictions of a future event, I think that the comparison is legitimate. Also, ther are verses where "the same day" appears: God spoke to Moses the selfsame day saying...(Deuteronomy 32:48). Again, a standard concordance will list other examples. I'm no Hebrew scholar, and I am assuming that the English translations are mirroring different Hebrew words, and if that is the case, then if the author of Genesis 2 had intended for God to say that Adam would die on the same day, he could have done so quite clearly and without ambiguity. That he did not would I think lend support to the argument that it was primarily the inevitability of the judgement, and not it's timing, that he had in view. |
