... when they have spent their lives promoting a lot of arbitrary and often absurd beliefs from the childhood of the race?

I am quite sure that all this pope coverage has some diabolical end purpose that we will all find out what it is and wish we hadn't. (No I'm not smart enough to figure out what that purpose is.)

Who is really respectable does not need propaganda to be respected. All dictators have used propaganda.
But, too much propaganda kills propaganda, happily ! ![]() |

I was surprised really that the pope got that much coverage in this country, where Catholicism is distinctly marginal and in fact we have fried rather a lot of members of the RCC church (though they were happy to reciprocate at one point

Recall Ratzinger's interference in the 2004 election. The morality of war and the death penalty were a matter of opinion, but abortion, euthanasia et al were against everything Catholic and against natural law. In short, vote for Bush. In making a big deal over papal transition, the bushies are returning the favor.
The Pope and traditional or conservative Catholics are in bed with Bush and the Protestant Christian Right. I heard conservative priests on TV state the Pope's aim is to correct the 'flaws' in democracies. Those flaws are essentially the same laundry list as those of the Fundies. Prominent Catholics were at the stupid "Justice Sunday" event, sounding exactly like Dobson and Falwell. |

It's not surprising. In essence, all communication is propaganda, an attempt by some one or some group to convey the message to which it wishes to persuade the audience receiving it. No doubt the Catholics wish for their pope to be looked upon favorably, so their communications will try to persuade us that we should respect the pope.

Just last week Catholics were told by their bishops to support the Frist/Republican/White House position to do away with the filibuster by writing letters to wavering senators. |

This would be a good question to ask Jack Chick.
