Default Christian/Hindu Conflict in India

not sure if this belongs here or in Non-Abrahamic Religion & Philosophy
http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/asiapc...nce/index.html
The remote east Indian state of Orissa -- historically a tinderbox of Hindu-Christian tensions -- erupted in violence this week after gunmen killed a Hindu leader and mobs burned churches in retaliation.

Police have been deployed in the state in the past to quell protests and violence between religious groups.

Four days of communal clashes left at least nine people dead. Authorities have imposed a curfew and ordered security forces to shoot violators on sight.

Pope Benedict XVI "firmly condemned" the fighting and urged the state's residents to "re-establish with the members of the various communities the peaceful cohabitation and the harmony that has always been the distinctive mark of the Indian society."

The Hindu leader, Laxmananda Saraswati, and four others were killed Saturday in the Kandhamal district when up to 30 gunmen barged into a Hindu school and opened fire, Orissa's chief minister's office said.

The tribals aren't really in the caste system - this news article is a bit of a red herring. Christian missionaries use inducements from western church funding to take tribals from their traditional belief systems (which aren't even strictly Hindu except by co-option) to Christianity. Hindus don't appreciate such missionary activity so there is some tension. In this case it sounds like the Hindu leaders were the target of violence.

The caste system is a convinient stick for Christian Church to beat Hindus with, though never mind they actually never do anything about it in their own church. (All rich parishioners are upper castes).

And actually the Hindu leaders could have been killed by Christians, Maoists claim their killings proudly.

So a 'could' equals burning people alive and raping nuns?

I didn't see a mention of raping nuns. Definitely the police is at fault for not shutting down this violence.

Logos sez: If hindus don't dispose of the caste system, that will be hinduism's ruin.

Is the caste system the excuse to kill the Hindu leader?? Caste system is Hindus' business and does not affect non Hindus.

The Swami WAS killed by the xians. He was a thorn in the flesh of the church. He opposed conversions by the xians, and deconveted the Hindus. Both activities not liked by the church.

Last December he was attacked and severely injured by the xians.

As for rape, there is no mention even by the churchians. No victim has come forward to be medically examined.

I think the article has a definite pro-christian slant!

They never can "escape" the caste system due to the fact that they were never really part of it. Either way, Buddhism, Sikhism, and Jainism have provided such an "escape" for nearly 2000+ years

Correct, and does anyone think we really need yet another imaginary religion in India or China for that matter??
