And gentlemen of the type I mentioned did exist in Rome. See the works of Juvenal, Cicero, and others.

Please actually show examples rather than shifting the burden of proof. Are any of them from a similar socio-economic background, additionally?

It appears I have conflated two stories, the one from John, under discussion here, and the one from Luke. I am embarrassed, and apologize.
