This name of ours took its rise in the reign of Augustus?? The common understanding has Jesus starting to preach in the 15th year of Tiberius. What is Tertullian referring to?

Goodness gracious. The plot thickens, and I have no idea where Tertullian is going to end up leading us.

My initial thought to your question above was Roman occupation of palestine. Or at least, a reactionary Christology as a consequence of it.

My impression upon coming to IIDB from the occasional reference to Tertullian was more along the canonical lines. But with some exposure here I do question that view now.

and Toto - I did see your reference to the Tent hypothesis on the other thread. I can see the attractiveness of that hypothesis, yes.

So many irons in the fire at the moment...

I personally don't feel like this has as much to do with how Tertullian dealt with or remained unaware of the concept of a HJ as it does with Doherty's expectation. That's kind of a 'dur' comment, but the seed of this conflict is the stuff of great conjecture. If there was any certainty on authorship and date there would be no point in speculation.

Sorry, I'm a nobody and a stick in the mud. Continue. Its a good thread.
