I would like to relate a few personal experiences I had while in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. Not that my experiences are representative of the whole, just something to consider.
A buddy and I were in Bahrain which is more or less the arab world's version of Las Vegas or New Orleans during Mardi Gras. Prostitutes, booze etc. I met a group of guys drinking in a hotel bar and the leader of this group was the minister of transportation or some such title in Saudi Arabia. He bought us some drinks and invited us to chat. Before long he invited us to a private bar so we got into a cab and off we went. This private bar was identical to any "dive" or "hole in the wall" bar you would see in the US. Pool table, dart board, budweiser signs, neon signs, I mean it was just unreal how identical this bar was to a million in the states. We shot pool, listened to western music on the juke box and generally had a good time. Later he had to go and my buddy and I were too drunk to realize that we didn't know where we were, didn't speak their language and had no idea how to get where we needed to go. Doh. So, we walked in the direction we considered most likely. Along the way we stopped and talked to people at their homes and asked for directions to the port. Everyone was helpful. We made it back just fine. Another experience in Saudi my buddy and I stumbled upon some strange ritual. In an alley there were hundreds of people gathered into a circle all observing something. Curious we pushed our way to the center and saw 2 men headbutting each other and both were bleeding profusely. I asked a man there what was going on and another man grabbed me by the arm, took me a few feet back and in English said "It is not good for you to be here, not safe, leave now". We did. I could go on, but I won't. The point is I encountered folks from Saudi, Bahrain, Kuwait, Egypt, Pakistan and who knows where else and never did anyone try to harm me in any way. These people do not hate Americans is the only conclusion I can reach. If they did I would have been dead a dozen times over. On the subject of binLaden, he is a nutjob. His reasons for hating are as varied as the people he recruits. Americans in Saudi, support of the Jews, women's rights, whatever. The guy is simply a dictator wanna be and he will cite whatever a potential recuit wants to hear. If he actually cared about these people he wouldn't encourage them to blow themselves up. Ok, done ranting now ![]() |

That, and it displays a vast misunderstanding of nuclear weaponry and tactics. Nuclear weapons are anti-civillian weaponry. Are you willing to kill thousands of innocent civillians to depose a despotic government? Quote:

They are, however, only useful for certain specific military targets. Often this will cause civilian casualites, but that's not the primary purpose of most nukes. Even during the height of the Cold War, nukes were targetted at specific stategic targets. Civilian casualties were inevitable, but the first priority was to destroy the enemy's nuclear and conventional warfighting capabilites. The idea of using of nuclear weapons against a weak nation as a punitive strike is, of course, horrific and immoral. |

It's a nice topic. But why should they put it in the ~elsewhere~?
Why do they (some foreigner) hate you (Americans)? Acutally it's the other way around. Why do you (Americans) hate them (foreigners)? The Chileans did nothing wrong to you. In fact they were practicing what you were preaching: freedom, liberty and democracy. But you help put down the democratic government of Salvador Allende and install the brutal dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. Chile is just one example. There are plenty more in South America, Africa and the Southeast Asia. Pinochet, Marcos, Suharto, aren't they your SOB? You help them rape democracy. Shame on you, "defender of democracy". And you have the gall to ask why they hate you. |
