I like sports and I like movies. I don't particularly enjoy award shows or post game interviews. I fly into a hairy snit when spoiled, over paid athletes and actors have the audacity to utter ridiculous comments such as " I just want to thank god for giving me this opportunity or ability or talent" or whatever.
Are they so arrogant to believe that if their god exists he would be wasting his/her time on bestowing useless attributes on the likes of them rather than saving the poor, the sick or the needy? I guess it's alot easier to believe in god when you have the benefit of goog genetics. |

I find it funny as hell when some rapper wins an award, goes and thanks God, and then goes back to rapping about "fucking hos" and "smoking bud" or whatever the next day.

I tend to take a god's-eye-view of things, and especially questions like this. Why would the gods act to improve an entertainer's, like a singer's, talent? The only way they can cause a particular kind of song to exist in the material world is to influence humans to write and perform that song (which does not mean the humans have to be aware of the god's influence). The gods do want to influence human music, so they need to and do make sure that the right people use their talent in the right way.
(Although pop songwriters are more important than the singers, as we all know but often forget. Probably it would make more sense to thank the gods for their influence on the songwriters.) As for why the gods aren't working harder on the problems of the poor. Even Jesus said that we'd always have the poor with us. If the gods have brought about so many changes in religion, politico-moral attitudes, technology, and the natural world, but none of them have ended poverty, surely the gods don't think that the very next change will be the one. Like many ancient pagans, I'm fatalistic on this one. |

[DA]Of course you should thank God! If you pray for something and then get it (like win the Super Bowl), God answered your prayer. If you pray and don't get what you ask for, you just didn't pray hard enough ... or at least not as hard as the player(s) on the opposing team.

Well if it makes you feel any better there are probably plenty of religious types who resent that people are invoking god's name in something so trivial. God has to deal with the important stuff like drowning people

I really feel the need to qoute a comedian here. This an immitation of a rapper winning an award by Pablo Francisco at Jay Leno's show if I remember correctly.

Although this needn't apply to all Christians, the Reformed community believes strongly that all elements of the world are part of God's creation, and that God has an active hand in determining the details. As such, you are strong not because you prayed to be strong and your prayer was answered, but that you being strong was part of God's plan. Accordingly, you are thankful that God's plan resulted in you being strong, even though it wasn't a favour he did you.
