Just a friendly mod warning: Don't.

I happen to think post slutting is a bad behaviour to engage in. Interestingly enough, Xorply's battle thread has somehow survived in spite of the furious pace at which posts are made in that thread. How much strain does post slutting have on the server that this board is hosted on?

Okay, time for a newbie to display her ignorance.

Would someone mind clarifying for me what post slutting is and - if the reasons aren't self-evident - why it's bad.

Post-slutting is posting for the express purpose of increasing one's post count. In many forums, such activity is considered spam. I have also heard that post-slutting here can also cause a strain on the server due the sheer size of this forum and its membership.

When someone posts something that is usually contentless in an attempt to increase thier post count, we call it post slutting. Can't say I'm not guilty of this, but that was before I discovered infidelchat and could get my quota of useless one liners there.
I'm not sure why its bad, other than it annoys some folks, but perhaps it is a waste of bandwidth.

Sweet, a valid post in a post slut thread. I kick ass.

Isn't this thread about post slutting really a prime example of post slutting? Why shouldn't my post here along with the other posts fall into that category?

Hmmm, this is complicated. If you provide a thoughtful, well articulated response to my post, then I guess that really doesn't fall into the post slutting category--even though the thread iself may constitute post slutting. But if my post warrants a thoughtful response, can it really be considered post slutting?

Life is complicated.

Post slutting is of course a waste of bandwidth. But the larger problem is that it also increases the load on the server for searches (everyone would rather people search before asking right?). Different people draw the "contentless" line at different places when it comes to post slutting (what else is new). I see lots of posts that seem to me as posts just to post. But then again I have a large lurker tendency.

I think one of the rules sticky posts some where mentions the search burden as the offical reason why post slutting posts will be deleted.

At the Metallica forum I moderate (http://www.metboard.com), post-whoring, as we call it, is not allowed. We had a couple of threads which were dedicated to post-whoring, but when the problem began to take over legitimate/serious threads, we cracked down and disallowed it. There was a lot of mud-slinging, some people left because of it, but I figure the boards are better off for it.

Now, we allow some degree of off-topic posts in a thread, but if the post-whoring becomes evident, we delete the posts and usually penalize the offender.

I know this is off-topic, but I'm curious - how do you penalize the offender? Sit-ups? Spankings?
