People need to remember that dying was what Jesus came down for. God in his infinite love decided to sacrafice himself and then raise himself up to change a law that he made.
The point is, it was preordained and the Jews and the Romans were just fulfilling God's plan. That's the Christian myth. Of course, the Christians, wanting to have their cake in their mouth and on the plate at the same time would say that the Jews had free will; which is why Christians hated them for so long. Also, Christians conveniently forget that Jesus was a Jew.
The entire Christian myth about Jesus dying is not anti-semitic. However, Gibson in his film probably forgot to mention that Jesus' death and resurrection was divinely ordained and ended up making the Jews look more responsible. I've heard that the film makes Pilate look like a puppet of the Jews rather than the Jews being subjects of Pilate which is what the truth is. The Romans were colonizers and the Jews were their subjects.

I wonder if anyone put up such a fuss about Jesus Christ Superstar with Ted Neely and Carl Anderson (a really awesome movie-great music and singing) since it depicts Pilate as whipping Jesus to "make the vultures happy," as he said in the film. The impression I get when I think of that scene is he doesn't want to crucify him due to lack of evidence of anything but that Jews demand it and he gives in. My question is why should I believe it went down like that since the Romans were the colonizers and held political power? Maybe I'm ignorant about something. If I am someone please fill me in.

The movie is as anti-semitic as the gospel it is based on. Early x-ians wanted to distinguish themselves from other jewish sects so they started the story that the jews had had their messiah crucified. The jews look bad; the xians have their martyr and savior. I don't understand why the jesus movies continue to soft-pedal Pilate as a hand-wringing/washing wimp. But then why believe a piece of propaganda written at best 30 years after the events happened at a time when facts and fiction were melded together in every story? It's one big act of denial of the TRUE REALITY , i.e., human beings are not immortal. Nothing is immortal.

I watched it, and after seeing all the ugly Jewish people sneering, hissing, spitting, and beating up on this poor piece of raw meat, I was sorta like: not anti-Semitic my ass.

They made the Jews out to be some sort of idiotic mob who would prefer a mass murderer over...poor, bloody, weak, trembly, martyr Jebus. They were irrational, bloodthirsty, power hungry, and evil.

It was anti-semitic, period.

I will have to point out that there were scenes not in the Bible depicted in the movie that was labeled anti-semitic. I haven't seen the movie myself, but someone said that the scene with the little demon children as not in the Bible and anti-semitic.
