An announcement:

FROM THE ATHEIST INTERNET OUTREACH PRESIDENT
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The hurricane that hit the southeastern part of the United States has
caused great impact to many. Atheist Alliance International is in the
process of collecting donations (at www.atheistalliance.org) to help,
through their member organization, the New Orleans Secular Humanist
Association. This hurricane has taken all things we take for granted
away from many. Please donate generously.
President, Atheist Internet Outreach
Subject: Message from New Orleans Secular Humanists and Atheists to AAI
Quote:
Friends,
This is Tim Ruppert from NOSHA. I'm a board member, but under the
circumstances, I can only speak for myself.
NOSHA absolutely will continue as an organization. We do not own or lease
any property, but we do have a lending library of books and videos which was
stored at the now flooded home of our president. I do not know if any of this
is insured or if it might be covered by our president's insurance if he has
any.
Our VP, Dave Schultz, has been keeping a list of who is safe and where they
are located, and who is still MIA. We are still waiting to hear from several
members. Myself and I would think most of the others we have heard from are
safe and in stable homes for now. We are the lucky ones. Our members who
we have not heard from are certainly the most needy, but until we locate them
and identify their needs, there's nothing we can do.
I think it's wonderful that our friends in the Atheist community want to
help. There is no doubt of a bountiful need throughout south Louisiana and the
Gulf Coast. But I can't tell you who, what, where or how much at this time.
Large areas of the city, including the neighborhood where I live are still
floating in 10 feet of water, and the shelters are still trying to register
and count everyone. The body count in flooded areas has not really even
started.
So, please, raise money now as you are able if people want to contribute.
Put it into a fund for future aid use, and for the legal wonks, include a
clause that money must be generally used for relief from Katrina not covered by
insurance and FEMA grants, and that any funds not used after two years can be
donated by the Board to another charitable purpose.
Again, I appreciate everyone's concern and care, and I look forward to
letting you know how you can help more substanatively in the weeks to come.. This
was a short catastrophic event that has become a months long disaster relief
effort.
Peace,
Tim
