Whoops, my bad. I searched around but didn't see this thread. Thanks for moving it to the proper thread.

As you can see, there is widespread skepticism over whether this is a first century fragment.

Along with a valid case that the fragment is not from the first century, most likely 2nd or 3rd century or even later. There's also an Egyptian parallel to Mark 5:15-18 on the issue of the swine and boat:

Quote:
"Rather than representing implausible "history," this theme is highly suggestive of the myth of the Egyptian afterlife god Osiris in the Hall of Judgment, driving off the devilish swine when the deceased petitioner goes before him. As related in Christ in Egypt (241), to quote W. Cooper:

Quote:
"Having quitted the boat of the river of Hades, the deceased is met by the god Anubis, who conducts him in safety through the devious windings of an intricate labyrinth, and leaves him at the threshold of the judgment-hall of Osiris, the hall of the Two Truths."
In the judgment hall, if the deceased is not sufficiently pure, he is changed into a pig and "reconveyed to earth by Anubis in a boat."
- 1st-century Gospel of Mark fragment found?

Has to do with from what material that silly tale of Mark 5:1-19 was fabricated.

It has about as much to do with Mark 5 as my boat ride. I sometimes feel like objectivity has gone out the window here and people run around cheering on any desperate link which seeks to embarrass religion. There is enough foolishness in religion that is fair game that we don't need to look to Osiris to explain Mark. Christianity can't have an endless supply of 'influences.' All the harebrained schemes developed here can't be all right. You guys should act more like a team of lawyers do before trial. Instead of admitting ever stupid theory, take the time to concentrate on the best arguments to present in front of the jury. Osiris influencing Mark is among the worst arguments possible.

About as good as will ever be come up with to explain all of the hooey contained in that particular tale.
Of course if you think you've got a better explanation, no one here is stopping you from putting it on the table.

Shitting in a cup is a better explanation than Osiris.
