Default Greek Zeus-worshippers call for state recognition

According to The Australian,

Quote:
A group of Greek pagans who venerate the ancient gods of Mount Olympus said on Friday they would shortly be seeking state recognition of their beliefs.
They are the "Supreme Council of the Gentile Hellenes"; they also want to visit archeological sites to practice their religion in, and they've outraged the Greek Orthodox Church.

There are plenty of Hellenic neo-pagans elsewhere; I've found pages on them like The Stele, About.com's pages, and Samnion's Sanctuary. And the Supreme Council of the Gentile Hellenes itself has its own page, with much of its content in English as well as in Greek.

Great stuff. It reminds me of a quote from Arthur Schopenhauer: "All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident."

So as it applies to Greece, it means that the worship of the Old Gods has gotten to the second stage. May their transition to the third stage come peacefully, and come soon.

Great news for all neo and reconstructionsist pagans. I hope it comes quickly as well.

The group's name is "Supreme Council of Ethnikoi Hellenes." I don't know how The Weekly Australian got "Gentile" but that threw me for a second (I imagined some kind of anti-Semitism).

Well, sometimes "fundamentalism" isn't such a terrible thing, given that so many aspects of modernity are.

It is very nice news. Zeus is one of my favorite gods.. Greek mythology is also very interesting.. Many of the elements of Greek Culture and Gods are similar to vedic Gods...

I think we should also revive Indra, Varuna and company as well... It is better to worship nature and forces of nature than worshipping heroes..atleast no one can copyright rain god like Indra OR zeus as their own private gods and be offended by joke cracked on rain and rain god.. It is good for social health..

Interesting little blurb on the net story about world-wide reaction to the solar eclipse. Apparently some people in Turkey carried tripods to what was left of the Temple of Apollo there!

This is great news. Athena was the first god to establish a presence in my mind (IIRC, I was about ten years old when I learned of her). May her many followers quickly regain access to the Parthenon.

And the eclipse-watching story in Turkey...

At the turn of the millenium these sorts of revivals always happen. It will pass.

Great news,-and then after them I think the Egyptian gods should be re-established.

I forget, how do you spell "dismissive"?

Obviously not a possibility, for the simple reason that Egypt is enmired in the oppressive religion of Islam. A religion that still kills people for converting to Christianity is hardly going to allow an organized form of pagan religion within its territory.

The gods of Europe believe in freedom, and the gods of the Middle East do not. Yahweh was born in Canaan, but he's lived among the European gods for so long that European values have rubbed off on him. But Allah is completely unreconstructed, and he is just as tyrannical as his Canaanite rivals like Baal.

The Egyptian pantheon is a more complex case than the Canaanite. They don't have the same kind of inclinations toward tyranny that resulted in the antedeluvian practice of human sacrifice (or at least not much). But they like the idea of an unchanging, static social order. They are probably so accustomed to being ruled by Allah that they are loyal to him, and support the oppressive Islamic society that prevails in their land. I think the Egyptian gods, at the present time, have almost as little interest in reviving paganism as the Egyptian humans.
