Is there some mention of Luke as gospel author before Irenaeus?

AFAIK, Papias names Mark and Matthew, Justin mentions Peter, and that's all.

As far as I'm aware, Luke and John being gospel authors first appears in Christian writings (that we have) in Irenaeus.

Perhaps it is because the gospel, now known as Luke, may have been considered heretical up until such time as Ireneaus corrected it.

...and addressed it to Theophilus of Antioch (c. 180 CE), who seemed to be clueless about the Jesus story.

why would Irenaeus address gospel to 180 AD figure and claim it was written by companion of paul living well over 100 years ago?

Part of the campaign to integrate the well established Marcionite church into the nacent Orthodoxy. The claim being that the Marcionites redacted an earlier Gospel.

Read Luke/Acts while considering Marcion and tell me what you see.
