Well I've gotten some good feedback, and heard some things that I wouldn't otherwise think about, so I would say that so far this thread has been successful. I could use still more feedback, of course.

If you would prefer to write me privately with your feedback, that would be good too.

I agree with you 100%.
I am atheist, and yet I would not mind even a little bit if it would be found that Jesus actually existed.
His existence has NOTHING to do with him being "a god" or not.
The concept of God has its reality in MYTHOLOGY (for reference see Joseph Campbell), and we have to learn to keep the mythical "reality" apart from the non-mythical reality.
