Hello, All!
As someone who's new here, and as such I'll let you know that I was a believing Christian for 18 years, but am now an atheist. I do enjoy discussing religion with all types, especially my former religion However, one of my biggest challenges as I talk about religion with my Christian friends and family is the real disconnect in communication. Christians have a different mindset and speak a different language than those of us who are no longer Christian. It's off site, but I've just finished posting an essay that I'm really hoping will address this issue by trying to communicate in psychological terms how I think this real disconnect in perception and communication occurs. I think this is an important prerequisite to any conversation that might have any hope of giving a glimmer of insight into my own perspective to those who are still Christian, (so a real dialogue can happen) so I'm interested in any feedback from either of the isle. The essay can be read here: http://savedtoskeptic.sylvangate.com....php?itemid=11 Thanks in advance for the feedback! ![]() --Minus 196 |

Absolutely on the topic. I've tried to say this for a while now but I'd always trip on my tongue. I'm really going to read this over and use it. Thanks!
The Condemnation and Faith nones were particularily useful and illuminating. |

I just enjoyed your essay, minus196, and welcome!
I spent 27 years as a christian before de-converting. We could probably swap interesting stories. It seems to me that the more I de-program myself from the christian mindset the harder it is to communicate. I have the advantage on the communication issues of being married to a fundamentalist christian and having fundamentalist christian kids and fundamentalist siblings. The disadvantages of that probably go without saying. If I might ask, how recent was your de-conversion? |

![]() I'm in the same boat on the family front. My wife is still a strong believer, and though my kids are too young to be such, I wouldn't be surprised if that's the path they take, at least for a while. In fact, my wife and family are really the primary reasons I'm trying to articulate my new and alarming perspective in essays and so forth. And this one will be a cornerstone of that effort, so thanks very much to everyone for the positive feedback (though I welcome criticism as well). ![]() Quote:
