Default Faith and Reason

I recently posted a thread on a Catholic Forum (see below):

http://www.catholic-forum.com/forums...4030#post36877

I was quite disappointed in the way it was received. Has anyone here posted on a Catholic or Christian Forum? If so, is this a typical example of what to expect?

Thanks.

edited to remove long list of links - one is left. - CCF_Thomas

Wow what a dick. Now they can claim you have no evidence because they edited it out.

 There is no all-loving, all-powerful, all-knowing, eternal, timeless, omnipresent and perfect God
This is an interesting opinion but unsupportable. To believe in the lack of a loving, powerful, omniscient, onipresent God is as much a matter of faith as believing there is.

 God does not answer prayer
Again, this is an opinion. Many in this forum could tell of countless answers to their prayers.

 God did not write the Bible
And there are few Christians who think he did. The Bible was written by men under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

You should invite Taize Prayer the Cleric to debate here . :rolling:

Man, you were lucky to get responses like this. Last time I tried posting in a Christian forum, I was repeatedly subjected to nothing but personal insults. On more than one occasion, I was actually AGREEING with certain aspects of Christina dogma, and these assholes CONTINUED TO ARGUE WITH ME, just because I said I was an atheist! Can you believe that? I was literally agreeing with certain things they said, and they continued to argue and insult me just for the sake of arguing and insulting. Granted this was an extreme fundy website.

Anyway, back to the OP, I nearly crapped my pants when I saw that one guy on the other forum asking why non-Christians are so immoral in today's society. Holy sh*t! And why was every other post somebody babbling on and on about "truth"? "If truth is real, then what is true must be truth, therefore God is truth." WTF?!? I couldn't understand a word of it.

Before you participate in a Christian forum, always give a quick read through and understand the purpose of the forum and the type of audience it is targeted at.

From personal experience, most Christian forums aren't supposed to be an avenue for the sharing, discussing and/or debating of ideas. They are more of an online faith counselling centre whereby people who are having a crisis in their religion go to reassure themselves by sharing personal anecdotes on the glory of God.

That's what most of these religious forums are. To put it more degradingly, it's like some sort of gathering place for a virtual orgy where believers can indulge in mental orgasm. Participants are there to strengthen their faith, not to discuss the merits of their religion. Consider your treatment over at Catholic Forum cordial as some its rabid counterparts are much worse.

When they say, "The atheist simply denies facts", they are telling you that they don't know the FIRST thing about Atheists and our arguments/positions. Atheists RELY on facts.
For this weird little example of an exchange that CCF Chris posted, here it is again with some commentary:

"There is no truth," said the atheist.
(Where the fuck did they get this? Making shit up as usual.)

"Is that true?" asked the theist.
(Theists who aren't in doubt don't ask this, they tell you.)

"No," said the atheist.
(Portraying us as liars again based on their own lies of who we are and what our positions are.)

"So if it is not true that 'there is no truth', it must be true that there is truth," said the theist.
(There is "the truth" about things but theists are not interested in what it is since it would invalidate their position. Facts ARE truth.)

"No that can't be true," said the atheist. "I change my answer. It IS true that 'there is no truth.'"
"So, if it is true, then there is truth! Hello."

(What a bizarre made up conversation, one that I don't see Atheists saying over here, where you can ACTUALLY hear them talking for themselves instead of what a religious pundit says we say.)

Of course the atheist grew tired of trying to answer his own questions to himself while another person was trying to communicate with him and looked for another sensation to fill up his time.
(Whoever came up with this lives in LaLa Land. We'll be happy to discuss things but here is about the only place since we get censored and banned for mere discussion on the xian boards)

My experience of posting to xian boards is mixed.

Usually, despite being on best behaviour, I've found myself shut out fairly quickly.

There was one board, which was on a board provided by the defunct Inside The Web, which was run by a Catholic, and was entitled something like 'Catholic/Atheist discussion which was run by a fairly broadminded catholic girl, which wasn't TOO much over censeored.

But I've long thought that the general tendency for freethinking and sceptical discussion boards and websites to engage in discussion with dissent rather than the general tendency of religious/paranormal boards and websites to cut out dissent is a good pointer to which has the moral high ground.

David B (sees censorship as a moral issue)
