Wait wait wait. I'll admit, I don't read the comic books, but in the newspaper serials, Spidey marries MJ.
He's not exactly scrounging for money anymore either.

Are the serials so far removed from the comics?

Given time to prepare, Batman was able to hold his own against Superman!

Spiderman is stupid enough to wear costumes that are actually alien parasites.

You all have obviously never read comics :P

Batman is a moody ol' loner with a utility belt.
Spiderman is strong enough to left >10 above his head, can unerringly sense incoming attacks and move fast enough to dodge bullets. And he has super-friends.

I love them both, but i'm sorry, spidey could put batman's head through a brick wall. Please note that he can toss cadillacs around like medicine balls, and has ten times the reflexes of batman.

If batman had the time to plan an ambush, MAYBE he could take him, kind of like how he beat down superman, but I just can't see it happening. Superman is a big oaf, spidey is used to jumping around like a flea on crack to avoid getting shot or smeared by a sentinel. Batman couldn't keep up.

But damn, would that be one kick-ass comic if they made it

Batman is to combat in the DC Universe roughly what Captain America is to the Marvel Universe.

Cap could beat Spiderman.

Therefore, Batman could beat him.

Again, it depends on circumstances, equipment, and lead time. I agree that if they were pitted stripped down in an adamantium cage match that Spidey would have Bats for lunch.

-- however, Spiderman has a long-running aversion to using his full strength on non-superpowered individuals. (There's a legendary fight between him and the Kingpin, where the Kingpin holds his own.) So it's also possible Spiderman would be pulling his punches.

I think all things considered, Batman wins roughly two-thirds of the time.

Eh, i'd still give the 2/3 favor to spidey, but that's just me. I still get annoyed that a lot of people forget that batman is a regular guy who's just well trained and very smart. No superpowers, just some gizmos and brains. Compare that to spidey sense, super-human strength and phenomenal reflexes and superior improvisational fighting, nevermind web tricks, and the favor tips to spidey.

Damn, we could argue this all day couldn't we?

can I remind everyone that we are talking about the same Batman who beat fucking superman. SUPERMAN!

How hard is crushing a little spider gonna be?

And if we are talking about the movie spiderman do we mean the movie spiderman that can't knock a human out with three punches, or the one who can stop moving trains with his bisceps?

I give Spiderman plenty of crdit. At various points in comics history he's fought the entire X-Men to a standstill, the entire Fantastic Four (and won), and a supervillain group consisting of Graviton, Titania, Goliath, the Brothers Grim and the Trapster (and won).

But if Bats has lead time, Bats will more likely win.

(Indeed we could.)

Well, if it was a kill or be killed cage match, and Spiderman was forced to take out Batman to save MJ or something, Spiderman could easily take Batman. He has the strength, speed, and agility of a friggin' spider after all! However, I voted Batman. Assuming that it is "meeting under their normal circumstances," and not the above scenario, Batman would win. For the same reason he beat Superman in DKR. He's willing to use the element of surprise and cheat. So, Batman waits in a bell tower and picks off Spidey with a high powered rifle. He wins.
