Although I think I'm doing more right things than wrong, I'm sure I've impressed a few negative images upon them. My ex stepson just visited and he was teasing me about the daily "job lists" than he and his sister had. Apparently they thought I was being excessive and wanted to be sure I made my kids do stuff too. Ha, wait 'til his new baby shows up and grows up. We'll see how he decides to parent. ![]() |

And why 12 of them and not some other number? I think I know the reason why, but that reason suggests that that particular number has some less-than-cosmic significance. |

Seriously you must approach this in a more forensic manner. There have been many good and valid points. Extract these and pursue them scientifically not emotionally. Just because I may want something to be true it doesn't mean that it is. Invariably what we want we never get. Which is why 90% of the world is mad. ![]() |

It's the division of the year into 12 months. A month is, of course, derived from the orbit period of the Moon relative to the Sun -- about 12.36827 per year. And NOT exactly 12, as one might expect from some esthetically-minded Universe-designer. This ugly ratio has been handled in these ways: * Lunisolar calendar. The months track the Moon's orbit, but an extra month is added every few years in order to keep the months from drifting in the year. Seven extra months added over each 19 years will produce a nice fit, with one month having to be subtracted every 6600 years or so. Ancient Mesopotamians had devised this system, which is still in use in the Jewish calendar. * Pure lunar calendar without extra months. The Islamic religious calendar uses this scheme, meaning that Ramadan drifts through the year as the years go by. * Pure solar calendar with "months" that do not quite track the Moon's orbit. This scheme was devised by ancient Egyptians, and a version of this scheme was adopted by Roman emperor Julius Caesar. Our present calendar is his calendar with a few tweaks here and there. The solution used in the Zodiac is a version of the third solution. Different people have seen different patterns in the sky. One can see that in our canonical constellations, where the northern and equatorial constellations mainly come from Greek mythology, while the southern ones mainly come from 18th-century techno-geekery. Consider the Chinese Zodiac, which also has 12 signs, most likely for the same reason as ours. None of its signs matches our Zodiac's signs. It's the origin of the Chinese years of various animals. For example, I was born in a Year of the Rat. Edited to add: Both Western astrology and Chinese astrology include their traditional elements: Western: Earth Water Air Fire Chinese: Earth Wood Metal Water Fire The Western Zodiac signs have their own elements: Fire - Aries, Leo, Sagittarius Earth - Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn Air - Gemini, Libra, Aquarius Water - Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces which form a recurring cycle with some misfits. Though crabs and fish live in water, scorpions don't, and they have a painful sting. Meaning that Scorpio ought to be a fire sign. BTW, the disease gets its name from the crustacean because blood vessels from a tumor make it look vaguely like a crab. The Chinese Zodiac, however, has an separate element cycle: Metal Water Wood Fire Earth with each element having two years, making the cycle repeat over ten years. Thus, I was born in a Metal-Rat year. For more, check out this article on Chinese astrology. If you've managed to get this far, my take-home message is that different astrologers have come to drastically different conclusions. |
