...only if Matthew knew it was symbolic. What's needed is a complete thesis of the evolution of Christian ideas. There is nothing to preclude a symbolic empty tomb from later being believed to be a literal empty tomb.

What we have is the end result of the evolution of ideas. From that, perhaps it's possible to glean the earlier ideas.

I see what you mean now. Hmmm... I don't see it myself. I think Jesus in Mark is speaking fairly literally, i.e. that the Kingdom of God would come before all with him had died. But it's an interesting idea.
