Default Religion-Inspired Bad Advice

This fellow on Christian Forums in the support forums is naming several depression symptoms. He's self-medicating, too.

I am not happy anymore, really sad, no reason. Don't care about life, death, no feelings. What's wrong. Feel I am closer to the end. Drink most
of the time, my family does not know how I feel. I have accomplished alot in my life, have had a good life, just don't care anymore. I want to
leave, close my eyes and never wake again. Maybe this is the end, there
are no right or wrong answers, just choices.
Just about everybody tells this guy that he needs Jesus, that everybody is praying for him, and that what he truly needs is God's love to save him. One person is practical enough to tell him to pick up the phone and call a professional.

I don't generally think that religions are harmful, but my attitude has been slowly changing. If I were to become convinced that most religious people take an attitude this simple when it comes to personal problems, that in itself would convince me religions are quite harmful.

Also, religion can mask many psychological symptoms. It can give an extremely mentally ill person a context in which, for instance, being posessed by "demons" or hearing voices is considered normative.
