Those who mentioned possible abuse, thanks. I hadn't thought of that, simply because this kid seemed very cheerful and showed no other noticeable signs of abuse. Worth thinking about though.

The basic idea is that unburned fuel and a spark (or heat, enough to cause combustion) are getting in the exhaust manifold at the same time. This could be caused by a carbuerator needing adjustment, the timing could be off or one of the cylinders isn't firing at all. Time for a tune up!

HTH,

Redd

thanks Redd! maybe the moderators won't notice the serious derail on this defunct thread! so you think it unlikely that the carb is simply clogged? I'm not sure I put the float spring back correctly, over the needle valve, could that be it? I didn't even notice that little bitty thing until it fell out. You rock.

Hi gaillardia, and welcome. You ought to read the thread Teachin' and Freethinkin'. (The link goes to my post, but the whole thread is worthwhile.)

Oh, and as the one throwing the cookout, let me extend a personal invitation!

LOLOL!!

Honey, I don't rock, I google!

Seriously, I rebuilt a carb several months ago...I can give you tons of links to online DIY sites, but I can't diagnose your ailment. Sorry!

But, if it were me (again!) I would start at the simple stuff, and work my way up in difficulty until the issue is resolved. So, yeah, check for a clog first. Then check the spring, etc.

Are ya coming to the cookout?

It is worth more than thinking about. The child expressed two things. One, she believes in God and prays. Two, she is concerned about her parents alcohol consumption. While it is good to know safe and effective ways to handle discussion about the first thing, the second thing takes precedence by a huge margin. The hypothetical "Do you pray for your parents?" follow up question should be deflected with questions like, "Why are you concerned about your parents drinking?" "Does your mommy or step daddy get angry when they drink?" "With each other, or with you?" "Do they hit you when they drink?"

The kid spontaneously revealed that she thinks her guardians drink too much! Why would the first thing that comes to mind be how to avoid getting in trouble for talking about religion?

mmm Ida know bout that. I lack inclination to delve into kids' private lives in an investigatory fashion. The kids don't lack for perception, and would likely see the direction of the questions. Many of them wouldn't mind, and would answer truthfully, but many would also hide things. Same difficulty telling the difference as with an adult. Also, like I said, without some direct indication of abuse, I don't think it should devolve into my business. Besides, she said she was praying about her parents' alcohol consumption. Around here, that easily may simply mean that when they get churchified, they also get preached and tracted that ANY alcohol is wrong. I wonder if I could find a market for Devil Beer, with a rakish guy on the label (or a saucy girl, or both), make it a local microbrew. hmmmm
