When I lived in Nashville, Tennessee, everyone there said that Nashville was the "buckle of the bible belt." Then, after I moved to Texas, a woman told me that Abilene, Texas was the "buckle of the bible belt."
Since then, I've seen or heard at least three other places (in different states) being described as the "buckle of the bible belt." What's the deal? If every place south of the Mason-Dixon line qualifies as the "buckle" then how can there be any "belt" left? ![]() |

Wouldn't a series of buckles attached together constitute a belt, provided they could keep one's pants up?

The belt is made out of the hide of the buckle, a little known creature now extinct.

It's a matter of pride or shame. Personally, I chose my locale description based on the horrid influence the First Baptist Church has in my town. I suppose that some people may claim the buckle as they are proud of the pious nature of their hometowns.

I just thought it was amusing and so fulfilling to everyone's preconceptions...
