Default MLB's "in the vicinity" force out at second base.

The "in the vicinity" force out at second base bugs me. The second baseman or shortstop should actually have to tag second base to get the force out at second base and NOT be 2 or 3 feet away from the bag.

And teams would have to carry 5-6 extra 2nd basemen for all the blown knees and broken legs their 2nd basemen will get with guys trying to break up a double play.

Another point is that there is no "in the vicinity" rule for catchers. Base runners can knock the fuck out of catchers and this is part of the game. And yeah, catchers have all that protective gear but tell that to Ray Fosse!

Minor Nit Pick There is a difference between a force out and having to apply a tag ... I wonder if there ever was any thought given to change the rules regarding plays at the plate.

Ah, the old "phatom tag."

That one's 100 years old, friend.

As far as baserunners knocking out catchers, that wouldn't be a problem if they ever, ever, ever called interference.

A catcher cannot block the plate with any part of his body. But they all do, ever single time. Mike Scioscia was a master at this.

I think the clarification is that the catcher can block the base path while he has the ball or is the process of fielding the ball. Rule 7.06

I'd just like them to enforce the "the batter must actually try to get out of the way of a pitch coming at him" rule and the "you have 20 seconds to pitch the ball if the bases are empty or it's an automatic ball" rule.
