Default Sources for the Gospels

In Bart Ehrman on the genre of the gospels ... , the topic of sources has been brought up.

I figured I'd start a new thread before the 'sources' topic pulled that one too far off the tracks.

Start with Michael Turton's Historical Commentary on the Gospel of Mark.

I don't know what else you want to discuss - the elusive oral traditions? You can search this forum for the term "refracted memory" to see the knots that NT scholars have gotten themselves into trying to find those oral traditions.

I'm not looking for the oral traditions. I don't expect to find them since they are obviously long gone: oral traditions die with the people who fail to pass them on.

Then what is the purpose of this thread?

To debate the sources of the gospels; which seemed off-topic in the other thread.

If you don't find the thread worthy, I can live with that.

Is there any real debate? Please state your position.

Perhaps we might rescue this thread with some discussion of how much of the Gospels content and angelogical and dualistic ideas are drawn from The Book of Enoch, Maccabees and other non-canonical literature. vis Matthew 22:25-30 >

JonA, what specific stories/parts of stories do you feel are based on oral traditions?

It should be pointed out that none of the non-canonical Gospels are based on any oral traditions. Apparently, the authors of those works were all deaf and could not hear anybody talk.

Richard Horsley and Joanna Dewey proceed, in consecutive essays, to sketch what they have also published elsewhere about the plethora of features of Mark’s style and content that suggest he has preserved the form and message of the oral traditions he inherited.--blurb for Jesus, the Voice and the Text: Beyond the Oral and the Written Gospel (or via: amazon.co.uk) / Tom Thatcher, ed.
