That the Torahitic authors and redactors worked in disparate elements of oral (and written?) traditions into their texts is widely accepted. Finally, the KH amulets are clearly Israelite, as they refer to YHWH. So whether or not one wants to identify them as "the oldest extant text of the Hebrew Bible," they certainly deserve mention in that context, since they are Israelite, Iron Age artifacts which contain text which appears in the HB.
From I understood the phrase "the oldest extant text of the Hebrew Bible", I received the implication that the HB must have been written before that time. My comment was merely to say that the implication was unfounded. The existence of the KH amulet text is merely evidence for that text's antiquity, not of the bible's antiquity.

EDIT: Never mind; just realized I posted something factually incorrect.

Of course. All of them, including the coming of the Messiah, Jesus.

1. Which is generally agreed to be the most reliable source for Old Testament translations: the Masoric Text, the Septuagint, or something else?

2. On a similar note, I've heard there's some disagreement over the value of the Byzantine majority texts vs. the Egyptian Minority texts. Which source is preferred for the New Testament?

3. If you were asked to recomend one book on Biblical criticism and history, what would it be?

Thanks in advance.

1) What are the most well-supported alternatives to the Documentary Hypothesis?

2) How strongly can HB accounts of the Creation, the Flood, the Exodus, etc. be connected to mythologies present in nearby civilizations with which the early Hebrews would have had cultural contact?

regards,

NinJay

This is a fragment from Numbers. But according to some Bible Chronoloy, what are the years [in the common calendar] when the people cited in Numbers lived, or events cited therein happened?

I would start with, "What is the Documentary Hypothesis?" or even, "Who Wrote the Torah / Pentateuch?"

It's a FAQ, so you can't assume knowledge of stuff like the Documentary Hypothesis; the point is to cover the basics like these, even if the theories behind them may seem outmoded to some.

Likewise, for the NT, "What is the Synoptic Problem?" not "What are the alternatives to the Two Source Hypothesis?" would be the start.

We need more basic questions people! Anybody have questions about the "K" in Tanakh...the "wisdom" literature? The books there, such as Job and Ecclesiastes, are among my favorites in the Bible.
