And one need only point to the fact that the story indicates when Jesus died people were surprised at the speedy death.

But I'd think both points of view are correct. The spectacle is for an audience.

Thanks for the tip. Drews also seems to have originated the factoid that in the 16th century Vossius possessed a manuscript of Josephus that was lacking the TF.
On Vossius and the TF see Voss(ius) and Josephus
