I had a look at his website, and I think he'd be better served separating his stuff on crimes committed by christians, from his ideas about Jesus not existing.
One of the charges often levelled against jesus-mythers is that they have an axe to grind against religion and that they compromise intellectual and scholarly methods in order to grind that axe.
From that perspective I think he will just affirm that view. That is, he will be seen as someone who is upset about crimes committed by christians, and his solution is to say jesus didn't even exist.

Humphrey's website presents a quote from Hoffman:

Ephasis mine. What nonsense. Biblical scholars will be thrilled there is something about which to write and sell books.

There are already more than enough improbable models of the historical Jesus festering in the many niches of lay people to supply writing topics. Some people care about the preponderance of misinformation, for the mere sake of the truth, though not many.

Stephen, arguing with people who disagree with your thesis and think they can show you where you are wrong is a good way to strengthen your thesis.
Sure Mikhail. That's why I get such a strong sense that this debate is actually going somewhere. I say, ignore the old fossils, wait until they die like Warren Buffett's kids right now.

There is absolutely no meaningful debates going on in the blogosphere. Godfrey's publication of Doherty's 57th response to Ehrman's book is not furthering any understanding of the issues involved with whether Jesus was a historical person or not.

History was never decided by these types of 'debates.' The only thing that changes minds is the sterile exchange of ideas among individuals who aren't 'venting' emotional baggage or using the debate to show how clever they are. It involves above all else that both sides have a commitment to the truth and truthfulness.

Who is capable such things? Not this old windbag that's for sure. His work on Marcion is simply awful. And this is supposed to have been one of his areas of expertise.

I wonder if Hoffman is chortling into his beer as he writes this. Nothing he has written previously indicates that he thinks that Biblical Studies has any way of illuminating the causes, context, or development of early Christianity, or that it is "serious business."
