I hate poodles.

Mongrels are the best, in my humble opinion!

I know this is totally off topic, but I have a hamster and he makes a great pet.

(They aren't just for kids - I'm almost 20!)

But in terms of dogs.. just go get a mutt at the pound. I had one when I was a child and it was the best dog I've ever had. Sweet and smart.

Whassup with that? I got that on my list too, even when I clicked on "enormous dogs". I've my heart set on a Bernese Mountain Dog. They are beautiful big calm dogs who are good with kids, other animals and strangers. But I will definately look into a rescue operation or the local pound for something similar first.

I know that adopting a dog can only make a tiny dent in this problem, but we can all do our part. I have enough other reasons to adopt a dog that altruism doesn't even have to enter the picture.
I have been watching the local shelter and I have considered that choice. I just hear medical issues on both sides of the fence. The other thing is that with a purebreed I have a better idea about what the temperament should be. I just haven't had the greatest luck with muts.

There was a 6 month old springer spaniel that I gave some consideration at the local shelter, but he is already gone. Don't worry I won't close the door on shelter dogs. In fact I keep tab on 4 shelters in the area. I just need to figure out what breeds to look for first.

Any particular reason? Have you ever met a standard poodle? I much prefer their temperment to their small counterparts and they are smart as hell. I am not a fan of any small dogs, personally, but even I like the big poods

Anyway, any type of water dog would work for you I think...spaniels and such. The Portugeuse Water Dog I posted earlier is a great breed.

Yeah, I'd vote for the Bernese Mountain Dog too. So cute!

Actually, what I'd do is get a mutt from the pound. Mutts tend to be far healthier than almost all purebred dogs. I'd look for a lab/shepherd mix, or maybe a border collie mix.
