Default Pillars

I have problems with a lot of the discussion. People are assuming that the gospel material is behind the Galatians 2 events, but if you take away the gospels for a while (after all no-one has successfully dated them, so we don't really know what their relationship with Gal 2 is), what can we glean from the Pauline comments?

We only know that the Pauline story was different from that of the pillars, but we don't know in what way. We just have the story that they happily got rid of Paul -- there, there, you go off to the gentiles and leave the real messianism to us.

So, which came first the chicken (Paul) or the egg (the gospels)?

Incidentally, who knows of sources for the apparent Semitic (be it Hebrew or Aramaic) flavour for parts of Acts?

I think Vinnie is the only one who would make that assumption. I've been questioning the "pillar"=Disciple idea implied by Mark's Gospel.

Don't we also learn from Acts that the "pillars" sent people around to the places Paul had preached in an attempt to "correct" his gospel?

I'm unaware of any credible evidence suggesting the Gospels were written before Paul's letters.

Perhaps that'll teach me for skimming.

Could be, but got a reference?

You know I would also wonder when Acts was written. It is a complex document in itself.

Perhaps I was too carried away with the "literary" image of the chicken and egg to be clear enough. I meant which came first the Pauline information in Gal 2 or the information we find in the gospels about the disciples we usually assume are the pillars?

I can't recall it but I can check my stuff at home. I'm pretty sure I found it once after reading a reference to it.

If only we had something that could answer that question definitively!

I wrote this earlier but it was swept under by subsequent discussion:

Paul's enemies

1) ...called the crucified Christ cursed (1Cor 12:3)

2) ...denied the resurrection of the dead (1Cor 15:12)

3) ...taught another Jesus, another spirit, and another gospel (2Cor 11:4)

4) ...specifically identified as Jewish Christians (2Cor 11:12-23)

5) ...perverted the gospel of Christ (1Gal 1:6-11)

Number four could be a reference to the Jerusalem crowd but can we find Mark's community in here as well?

3-5 are clearly folks who claimed to be Christians but can we assume the same for 1-2?

Acts 15 -- Silas and Judas are sent by the "pillars" to travel with Paul and Barnabas and confirm their preaching.
