The idea that JC traveled the orient and studed traditions like Buddhism is very old.

The idea that he had a stand in at the crucifixion is an old idea as well. JC did say someyting like 'There is no greater love than to give one's life for a brother/friend.'

That would also explain a mircaculous resurection.

Yeah, I've been reading up on it. Bought a few books, surfed a few websites. I think it is just as believable as anything else written about him. I have adopted this idea, but it could be wrong, it is as good as any other speculation about him, IMO, and seems to explain some things.

place particular care in presenting Jesus as a small child,
a boy, an old man, etc, making sudden appearances and
just as sudden disappearances.

Perhaps Photius summarises this issue best in his mention of
the very intriguing pseudonymous author "Leucius Charinus".

Surely the brother of Jesus would have had his brains picked clean by Christians eager to know what Jesus had been like.

There are a few apochryphal Gospels that deal with Jesus' childhood. I. Infancy and II Infancy (aka Thomas's Gospel of the Infancy of Jesus Christ). I believe I Infancy is from the Gnostics and deals with Jesus' childhood in Egypt and after their return. They both kind of remind me of Superboy illustrating the difficulties the parents have in teaching him how to controls his incredible powers. One story has Jesus killing another child who accidently brushes up against him, then Joseph has to grab him by the ear and lecture to him how he was a bad boy. Don't believe James is mentioned in either,
