The punishment for breaking any one of these commandments is DEATH!

Not a debate, simply pointing out the mindset of Christians (last six words at bottom - maybe you missed it). On second thought, maybe I should have put this in humor.

On another forum one of the most vitriolic criticisms of Christians is the apparent ability of some of them to read minds of athiests and nonbelievers. Of course this would never happen on such a rational and clear thinking forum as this .

The purpose of the law, from a Christian POV is to measure how far we have fallen short of what we should be. It is not a source of salvation. We are not saved by keeping it. To paraphrase Paul: (Ro 3: 23, 24)

Herein lies THE chasm between Christianity and Judaism: Judaism sees the Law as a tool for getting close to God, forming a relationship with Him, by performing it. Christianity sees the Law as a setup by God to show people how far away they are from Him.

I’m having a debate on this very subject with peaceful soul on Christian Forums. He can’t read the OT except through NT glasses.

It is true that the principles behind the law are a good guide for getting close to God. If we live by the principles summed up by:
Then we move towards God. It is interesting to note that 60% of the commandments are about our relationships with others rather than God. I'm not convinced there is much milage in the dietry and cermonial laws for gentiles. They are specific to Israel but if I were a Jew I would probably try to keep them.

This is one of the reasons that most theologians do not consider the 10C to be an exhaustive moral code.

assuming you are talking about the specifics of the dietary guidelines, this jew agrees with you, there isn't anything especially special about kashrut. however, i do believe there is value in the general idea of having dietary guidelines - and the ever-expanding waistline of "eat what you want" america would seem to support such a claim. the majority of americans would imo be better off keeping kosher if for no other reason than it eliminates 95% of the items available on fast food drivethru menus - but kashrut is certainly not the only way to deal with dietary issues.
