Because they had control of the publishing rights, which we are told became a substantial industry. Their shame was good for business and the tourist trade.

These are internal indicators. They are not likely historical. What are the external indicators of the apperance of blasphemy against the "One Most True Story"? These would have to be represented by the "Gnostic Gospels and Acts" which, according to the heresiological church fathers, were authored by vile heretics who were disciples and sons of the devil. The "Life of Brian" is a modern version of a "Gnostic Gospel". It employs parody and appeals to the masses by making them laugh at an alternative version of the "Jesus Story". Thank Christ for Monty Python.
