They probably always cross paths, but I would guess it more likely a cruel irony that they rarely stay a couple. Fate always tries to break them up.

I'm still sticking with my theory that Desmond lied to Charlie about his impending doom; in some future episode he'll shamefully admit that he was the one supposed to die in the control room. It'd be a clever turnaround on an episode which seemed to confirm that you can't fight fate, instead showing that you indeed can.

We really DO NOT know if that was time travel or some hallucination, or something else.
