lol. sorry. if empirical was looking for some commentaries on qohelet, i figured he might want to see some of the earliest comments on it. my basic point was that before it was 'chrisitanized' made into orthodox literature, there was great debate over it's very presence in scripture (along with shir hashirim). some thought it made the hands dirty (and since the song of songs is basically biblical porn, it was a valid critique). others thought it was from solomon, and therefore should be included.
as to empirical's initial questions: yes, qohelet 12 is likely a later addition to the text, added in an attempt to salvage the text into a more orthodox format (much like the second part of job 42). and yes, the 'spirit' line in verse 7 is odd. the concept of a spirit that returns to god is not jewish (nor christian), but platonic, offering a hint to the date of the composition. overall, it is unique (and beautiful) that the hebrew bible would preserve such 'non-orthodox' works like qohelet, song of songs, and job. qohelet disagrees squarely with deut with regard to god punishing the righteous with the wicked. |
