I can't remember which author it was but he presented the case that John was written by multiple authors. So we may be able to date some of John to 125 or so I don't think we can date the whole gospel. But I would to see if I'm wrong.

That brings up another question. When did the name "John" get attributed this Gospel? I'm reading Asimov's guide to the Bible where he speculates that John didn't put his name in the gospel for two reasons:
1. To enhance the view that the gospel was God inspired. 2. On a more cover-my-ass level, to save himself from possible persecution. If #2 is true, then John would not have titled his work "The Gospel of John." Was it just the word on the street that this was the Gospel written by John, and got tagged with that name by Heracleon, etc. at a later date? |
