Sargon II. Quirinius (Cyrenius). Pilate Many, actually. The interesting thing is that the only ones we can verify are the ones who are on the 'other side,' i.e. the non-jews, non-christians. If Josephus is accepted as evidence there would be a few more such as John the Baptist. Julian |

The Mesha stele has evidence for Omri, and that a son of his ascended to the throne after him. Also possible evidence for the tribe of Gad (or some other entity by that name). Omri had conquered some cities in Moab.
Kurkh Monolith of Shalmaneser III 853 BCE mentions Ahab the israelite, as one who contributed 10,000 soldiers and 2,000 chariots to the coalition defeated by Shalmaneser III. Black Obelisk of Shalmaneser III 841 BCE mentions Jehu (of the House of Omri?) paying tribute to Assyria. (Also the only Israelite for whom we have an image of any kind.) Tell Rimah Stela of Adad-Nirari III 797 BCE - mentions tribute paid by Joash the Samarian. Calah Annals ca. 738-37 - tribute paid by Menahem the Samarian. Others mentioned in Assyrian sources: Pekah and Hoshea (last Israelite kings). There are the seals of servants of Jeroboam (II) and Hoshea - I think they are considered authentic. Jehoahaz, the Judahite [= Ahaz] Sennacherib mentions capturing Azekah and Lachish from Hezekiah of Judah, as well as the siege of Jerusalem. Manasseh paid tribute and supported Assyrian campaign in Egypt. A Babylonian tablet mentions rations given to prisoners/dependants of the court, among whom was Jeho iachin. Seals and seal impressions of Judahite kings and/or their servants from Azariah/Uzziah on - I don't know how many of these are considered authentic and how many suspected or proven to be forgeries. |
