Are CE and AD the same thing?
Excuse the stupid question but, what does CE actually stand for when put after historical dates. I have always assumed that it was interchangeable with AD, but is it?

Yup, "common era" functions for all people, not just christians. BCE = "before common era".

I thought the C stood for xian era! Maybe we should say x years ago or define it as they did then - 600 years after foundation of Rome etc.

As far as I'm currently concerned, it's Heisei 18 right now. I'm just glad the Japanese decided to stick with one name per Emperor after the Meiji Restoration. It really had to be a pain remembering 'Hmm, is it Juei 4 or Genryaku 1 this year?'.
