I also work in a call center. My prejudice is with East Coast accents. I cannot STAND that nasal New York whine and it makes me biased against them immediately. I do try very hard to keep that little prejudice in check. |

I have.... a problem with the mentally handicapped.
Yes, I know they can't help it. They're less fortunate than myself, and their lives are often very difficult. Our society is very wrong in its lack of care for such people. But they are still: A.) given to acting dumb (by definition), childish, and having less self-control than a given situation is generally held to warrent - especially worrisome when a person is much larger than yours truly. B.) lionized in cultural products like Forrest Gump (the movie, I'm told the book is more honest) as having some specialized higher moral functioning related to 'innocence', which I know is not true. The same can be said of children, of course, but children at least grow up. They were also the people who gave me the most hell with demands for special treatment (not even 'reasonable accomodation' type special treatment, but special treatment like 'well, all I have is five dollars, can I just give you that - no? - then you're a big meany, and I'll cry and refuse to let go of my intended purchase when you try to take it back and reshelve it', and 'oh, can I touch the complicated shiny stuff that no one is allowed to touch - no? - then I'll just do it when you're not looking, and break things') of any identifiable group when I was in retail. |

It seems that to have a "prejudice" is looked upon as a bad thing in society. But, how is it inherently bad? If a certain group of people generally share characteristics that drive you mad, how is it wrong to overall dislike them and want to avoid them? As long as you don't harm them, and are still otherwise willing to help them in times of need, I don't see the inherent immorality.

'Prejudice' is not an inherently negative sentiment either. It just means a judgement prior to data. I have a prejudice in favor of gay and lesbian people because it has been my experience that they are more caring and considerate than straight folks. I'm sure many of us hold other positive prejudices as well.

I'm with villainess on the retarded thing. Handicapped people in general kinds of make me uncomfortable for some reason.
And two groups that that kind of irk me are: Total White Trash and Ghetto Assed Black People. |

It is true that there are both positive and negative prejudices. But negative prejudices are often frowned upon, and that is what I commented on.

Drivers who make slow turns really piss me off. Those that come to almost a complete stop on a 40 mph road, then slowly turn onto the other road, while there is a huge traffic jam behind them. Oh, and you can find tons of these drivers in NJ.

I can't stand for long the dialect of Austria (not Australia). German spoken with that eeerk$%&"°*-accent make me switch off my ears after a while.
Strange, that some here appear to have a dislike to some special dialects, that means another special and not every other kind of stressing/pronouncing the own native language. (Did the last sentence make sense? I had to search for the formulation, english not being that easy to foreign). That makes me think about it more and maybe find a reason/explanation (at least for myself). Or does someone here with psychologic knowledge can say more to that point. |
