Sorry to revive (resurrect?) an aging thread but something occurred to me while reading the essay. It seems to me that most (all?) of the dying and resurrected savior godlets from that time and place died ignominious deaths. Adonis was gored by a boar, pretty embarassing if you are a god. Attis castrated himself under a pine tree and subsequently bled to death (legends vary about him) which, to me, seems moderately embarassing. The latter could be related to his function in fertility myths.
Boar, castration, crucifiction. Seems perfectly in line to me. Very good essay, Vork, I enjoyed it. Julian |
